About the European Media Literacy Week

The European Media Literacy Week is an initiative by the European Commission to underline the societal importance of media literacy and highlight existing media literacy initiatives and projects across the EU. Media literacy stakeholders, in particular those at the regional and national levels, are encouraged to organise their own events during or around this week, to celebrate and discuss media literacy.

The event serves as a response to the critical need to promote media literacy in all countries of the European Union. Media literacy has never been as important as it is today. It is is a crucial skill for all citizens regardless of age, as it empowers them and raises their awareness. It also helps to counter the effects of disinformation campaigns and fake news spreading through digital media.

The European Media Literacy Week 2022 was held from 24 to 28 October 2022 in alignment with the UNESCO Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2022, which also started on 24 October 2022.

The guiding theme for 2022

As an offshoot of UNESCO’s focus on trust during this year’s Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2022, the European Media Literacy Week was conducted with the guiding theme:

Media Literacy in Times of Crisis – Promoting Trust and Cohesion

The guiding theme confirms the importance of media literacy for trust and cohesion in society. Media literacy is a crucial instrument for promoting trust, as it equips citizens to process the information they encounter online and distinguish trusted sources from misleading news.
